93-Year-old Chiefs Fan Kicks Off 50th Year as Season Ticket Holder

Football devotee attends first game in Philadelphia, and season tickets since 1973

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- If you ask lifelong Chiefs fan Joe Stapleton to name his most memorable moments from attending games in person, be prepared to stay awhile. In his 50 years as a season-ticket holder, he's witnessed numerous record-breaking performances, from Len Dawson to Patrick Mahomes, and plenty of heart-pounding finishes that have ended in victory.

But one memory that still brings a smile to his face is the time he saw a streaker run across the field at Municipal Stadium.

What is it like to be a long-time Chiefs season ticket holder?

"My years as a season-ticket holder have been a blast. I've met some great people, made some lifelong friends, and seen some amazing football," Stapleton said.

He says one of the things he loves most about being a Chiefs fan is the camaraderie he shares with fellow fans.

"It's like we're all part of one big family," he said. "We all cheer together, we all cry together, and we all celebrate together."

How have the Chiefs changed over the years?

Stapleton has seen a lot of changes in Chiefs Kingdom over the years, both on and off the field. He remembers when the Chiefs played their home games at Municipal Stadium, and he's witnessed the team's move to Arrowhead Stadium.

He's also seen the Chiefs go through some tough times, but he's never given up on his team.

"I've seen some great teams and some not-so-great teams," he said. "But I've never lost my faith in the Chiefs."

What's your favorite Chiefs memory?

When asked about his favorite Chiefs memory, Stapleton doesn't hesitate to answer.

"It was the 1969 season," he said. "The Chiefs were playing the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship Game, and they won in the first-ever overtime game in professional football history.

"That was one crazy game, and we came out victorious!"

What are your hopes for the Chiefs this season?

This will also be the first season in 50 years that Stapleton will not attend every game in person, but will instead watch the games from home with his wife.

Despite that, he's still hoping for a big season from the Chiefs.

"I think we have a great team this year," he said. "I'm really excited to see what they can do."
